Honoring our Family Historian, Emanuel Nat Smith
We are honored to keep the memory and legacy of the Smith Family Historian, Emanuel Smith alive by announcing the Emanuel Smith Family History Scholarship! This scholarship will be awarded to descendants of Mitchell and Annie Eliza Smith who are currently pursuing educational opportunities after high school. Applicants can apply by clicking here!

Our Proud Smith Family History
The History of Mitchell & Annie Eliza Smith
Mitchell Smith and Annie Eliza West Smith stand at the root of our family’s story. Mitchell was born on August 29, 1898, in Buckingham County, Virginia, the son of Isaac and Amanda Smith. Annie Eliza was born on June 25, 1903, in Prince Edward County, the daughter of John F. West and Pinky West. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and hard work, establishing a home near Mount Moriah Baptist Church that would become a gathering place for generations of descendants.
Through determination and skill, Mitchell rose from the world of tenant farming and sharecropping to become the owner of nearly 100 acres along Dry Bridge Road in Prince Edward County. He was known as a capable farmer who cultivated tobacco and other crops, cared for livestock, and worked the land with patience and wisdom. Family members remembered orchards of peach, plum, and nut trees, rich fields, sturdy barns, and a home that reflected years of labor and sacrifice. Annie Eliza was the heart of that home, managing a busy household, raising their children, and helping create the stability that allowed the family to flourish.
Together, Mitchell and Eliza built more than a farm. They built a legacy. Their children and grandchildren carried that legacy from Prince Edward County to communities across Virginia and throughout the nation, while Mount Moriah remained the family’s spiritual and ancestral home. Mitchell passed away on February 10, 1963 and Annie Eliza on May 10, 1982, but the values they embodied, faith, perseverance, generosity, and commitment to family, continue to unite their descendants today. As we gather for this reunion, we honor not only what they achieved, but also the foundation they laid for all who came after them.
